place. But, I have won the overall championship, so this makes it a bit
tougher because I must defend the title now."

On the third day, runners can make a 3km detour which will take them

Swimming - Lurz cements Open Water World Cup lead
Germany's world champion Thomas Lurz heads the men's open water world
cup swimming rankings going into Sunday's World Cup Open Water event in
Hong Kong
Earlier this month he notched up his 6th win in a row in China beating
Russia's Abrosmov Ktill by just over a scond with his 10km time of 1h 55m
10.98s.

Orienteering - Swiss rule cup on home ground
Simone Niggli rounded off her season in the best possible way by winning
the PostFinance Sprint in Zurich city centre and in so doing, becoming
the overall winner of the 2009 World Cup. Daniel Hubmann also won for the
second day running, finishing with a huge points lead in the men’s World
Cup.
Simone has steadily regained her best form as the year has progressed
after giving birth last year, and today’s win confirms her standing as
the world’s best female orienteer yet again – she also won the World Cup
every year from 2004 to 2007 inclusive. Today’s victory was by a margin
of 18 seconds over Anne Margrethe Hausken, with one of the others in close
contention for the title, Marianne Andersen, coming third a further 4 seconds
down. The third contender, Helena Jansson, was disqualified.
Daniel Hubmann won by 16 seconds over his compatriot David Schneider,
and the Russian Andrey Khramov took third place, 5 seconds slower again.
The Swiss runners provided plenty of excitement for the big crowds of spectators,
taking 5 of the first 6 places. Daniel Hubmann’s only serious challenger
for the title, Thierry Gueorgiou, could only finish eleventh today, although
he was in fact only 56 seconds slower than Hubmann.
24/09/09
Orienteering - World Cup finals - Hubmann or Gueorgiou? Andersen or
Jansson - or Niggli?
Who will take overall victory in the World Cup this year? That question
will be decided this weekend when the two final events take place in and
around Zurich, Switzerland. Both races count for World Cup points, along
with a competitor’s best 5 of the 7 races held so far.
A fascinating battle can be anticipated between home runner Daniel Hubmann, World Champion at Long Distance, and Thierry Gueorgiou of France, Middle Distance World Champion. Hubmann leads Gueorgiou by 15 points in the current standings, but with 100 points for a win, 80 points for second place and 60 for third, this situation can rapidly change. Current third overall is Sweden’s Peter Öberg, but with 76 points fewer than Hubmann he may not find it possible to advance on that position.
Minna Kauppi, Finland, current leader in the women’s standings, is injured and sadly will not be taking part this weekend. Second to her is Marianne Andersen, Norway, who leads third-placed Helena Jansson, Sweden by 55 points. Andersen won two silver individual medals in the World Championships in Hungary and will be aiming to be at the top this time after Sunday’s race. But there is another contender for the title – no less than Simone Niggli, newly-crowned Long Distance World Champion, who on home ground will for sure be out to prove that her come-back after childbirth is complete. Niggli has just 15 points fewer than Jansson in the standings.
Saturday’s race is at Middle Distance, in complex and in parts hilly forest terrain with very varied runnability. The 40 runners with the highest World Cup standings run last, starting in reverse order (leader starts last).
The final race on Sunday is the annual PostFinance Sprint, which this
year will be held in the heart of Zurich city and in the historic old town
on a festival day when the whole centre of Zurich will be traffic-free.
This area of Zurich is completely new for orienteering, and a very large
crowd of spectators can be expected. The participants in each class will
be the 40 highest-placed competitors in the World Cup standings after Saturday’s
race.

This year's 26.2 mile marathon Kaiser Marathon course in the Alps which
finishes at the summit of the 1829m Hohe Salve will prove more testing.
But his recent two day 70km mountain marathon orienteering win in Norway
is sure to give him confidence.

Mountain Running
Kenyan world grand prix race winners, Jon Sombol
and Geoffrey Ndungu, will not compere in next weekend's world championships,
say the Italian organisers.
But Uganda will provide a strong World track championship presence.
Martin Toroitich, Simon Ayeko and Geoffrey Kusuro did not record the
best of performances in Berlin, but have a chance to conclude the season
on a good note- reports African Monitor.
Instead of returning home with the rest of the team, the trio travelled
to Italy for next Saturday's World Mountain Running Championships.
Toroitich, an elder brother to former world junior champion Boniface
Kiprop, finished 22nd in the 10,000m final in Berlin.
Ayeko and Kusuro lost out in the heats of the 3,000m steeplechase and
5,000m respectively.
Torino could afford all three the chance to make amends..
Moses Cherop, who finished second in the national event, will join
the rest of the team next week.

ORIENTEERING - The
controversey surrounding the World Orienteering Championship Relay in Hungary
last week continues with French middle distance champion Thierry Gueorgiou
saying that he does not think the medals should have been awarded.
(see blog http://tero1.free.fr )
The race ended in chaos when last lap leaders Gueorgiou, Norway's Anders
Nordberg and Czech runner Michal Smola stopped to help Swede Martin
Johannson who had been speared in the leg by a broken branch.Gueorgiou,
joined by Smola, helped Johannson while Nordberg ran for help.
All three later finished the course while Johansson was taken to hospital.
But in the meantime runners from Switzerland Russia and Finland ran
on unaware and crossed the line in the medal winning positions.
At the prize giving, all three were publically thanked for their
actions and complimented on their sporting behaviour..
But then in a muted ceremony the medals were presented to the Swiss,
Russian and Finnish teams.
"I would have appreciated seeing the result cancelled," says Gueorgiou,
adding ....."What is the meaning of these medals? Half value or no value
at all."
But event director Tibor Zsigmond told web site Attack Point (www.attackpoint.org)
that the decision was not taken lightly to go ahead.
The teams were asked their opinion and it all came down to a split
committee decision.
Last year, Ggeorgiou lost out on the final leg of the relay when
again he seemed set for victory.
He swallowed a bee and was stung in the throat forcing him to retire
from the race to seek urgent medical assistance.

MOUNTAIN RACING - Double success for Kenya at recent Mountain
Running Grand Prix Events could herald an African takeover of this IAAF
sport to match their domination on the track roads and cross-country.
In Norway (15th Aug) Kenyan Jon Sombol (69:55) beat world six times
world title winner Jon Wyatt (70:00) of New Zealand into second at
the 8.2km uphill Skaala race in Norway..
The Kenyans tried out in mountain running some years ago but made heavy
weather of it.
Sombol's win followed up a GP win by Geoffrey Ndung'u in Austria the
previous weekend.
