Orienteering - *****Stevenson takes world sprint title *****
COPY / RESULTS
Jamie Stevenson trounced the opposition to take the World Orienteering Championship sprint title at Rapperswil in Switzerland yesterday finishing over 19 seconds up on the best of the opposition with his time of 12m 43.70s for 2750m.
Yvette Baker won Britain's only other world title at Inverness in 1999.

The Swedish based Edinburgh man opted out of the classic long distance championship - the qualifier was on Monday with the final today (WED) - to concentrate on the two shorter events.
"My best international results have been over the shorter distances," explained the European middle distance bronze medalist, "I felt I had to specialise and I have no regrets".
Running in soaring temperatures through the twisting cobbled streets of old Rapperswil, he was already 14s up on Czech leader Rudolf Ropek at the 1.5km check point.
Ropek eventually took 2nd.
"I've had a very good run," said Stevenson, " I was going fast although I didn't know it at the time and my legs were heavy with lactate."
He sprinted into the finish in the local ice stadium to a tumultuous welcome  from a crowd who already knew that top contenders Yuir Omeltchenko - the Ukrainian Park Race world number one and 2001 double short distance medalist Pasi Ikonen, had dropped away.
"It was a fantastic and such a surprise," said Stevenson.

Orienteering- Munro posts world title intent
COPY
Heather Munro posted due warning of intent finishing 2nd in her long distance heat at the World Orienteering Championships in Switzerland yesterday.
All six British runners won through on a day of few surprises at Zugerberg where steep valleys, brambles, and temperatures over 30 degrees provided tesing going with route choice at a premium.
Munro's performance placed her amongst the top contenders and showed every sign that she is maintaining the form that saw her win the O-ringen Five Day title last month.
Switzerland's 1995 short distance world champion Marie- Lucie Romanens won their 6.2km heat in 52m04s while Munro took 2nd in 53:34.
"I made a shaky start," admitted an ebullient Munro, adding, "I feel I have more to give in the final."

Aberdeen's Jon Duncan, preselected for August's World Championships in
Switzerland, will come under fire from a strong contingents of British team
hopefuls at today's (SAT) Scottish Individual Orienteering Championships at
Glen Truin near Newtonmore.
This is a  British National Event series race, so the elite men's lineup
includes fifteen English entries headed by Newcastle's Ed Nash and the
Octavians British relay title winning squad from last weekend.
But the main opposition for the Scottish Championship trophy will come from
tile holder Tim Lenton, league leader Al Buckley (both Interlopers), and
Forth Valley's Nick Barrable.

Tough going, made tougher by recent rains, is promised and Lenton is famous
for his tough ground running but then Duncan is no slouch either  on heavy
ground.

Women's title holder Gillian Godfree can expect strong opposition from
Interlopers clubmate Claire Williams who has worked her way back from a
road traffic injury to enjoy her best season to date.
Last week she was joint first in the UK Cup race in Sheffield.
Former British internationalist Hazel Dean (Forth Valley) finished 3rd there
and could feature on Speyside.

The Kincraig Highland wildlife Park is the venue for tomorrow's (SUN)
championship relays with Interlopers the club to beat in both the men's and
women's open events.
And the weekend closes with an open non-championship race at Alvie near
Kincraig on Monday.

Orienteering- Northern clubs dominate at Jan Kjellstrom Relays

Northern club runners dominated both the opposition and the terrain in yesterday's Jan Kjellstrom Open Relays at Hambelden Woods near Henley.
With speed the priority on fast south of England terrain Cumbria's Warriors won a close four lap battle with Edinburgh University to take the Jan Kjellst4om Trophy for the second time while the Women's Trophy went to York Eborienteers who beat Edinburgh Interlopers into 2nd after another close tustle over three laps. South Yorkshire finished 3rd in both.
That said, the Warrior quartet of Rob Baker, Roger Goddard, Jeremy Edwards and Dids Jenkins hale from across England and they went out ready to sacrifice running speed for accuracy.
"we decided we didn't want to miss any controls," said Edwards. "In all we lost maybe 15 seconbds in errors."
Edinbrugh's Murray Strain led Baker home by over a minute on the 8.5km opener but then Goddard converted the deficit into a half minute lead. His was the fastest "short" 6km lap of the day at 27m46s.
Edinburgh regained the lead on lap three but Edwards kept in contact leaving Jenkins to do the business on the final 8km circuit.
Despite illness, injury and lack of training their last man started with the advantage of forced absence form Sunday's race at Bracknell. Fresh legs saw take the lead at half way and forge a 38 second lead by the line.
Success came doubly sweet for Eborienteers' anchor Jenny Whitehead for she lost 2 crucial minutes at what some thought was a wrongly placed control at the same venue in Saturday's individual race.
Eborienteers Irish internationalist Aislinn Austin finished 8th in the pack on the opening 7km lap but Heather Gardener, u-20 elite winner on Sunday, came through on the middle 4.8km circuit to hand Whitehouse a 50m lead.
"I started out hard to avoid running with the others," she said.
They never saw her after the first control and she came home the winner and over a minute clear.

Jon Duncan (Grampian) and Heather Monro (S London) maintained the status quo of British elite orienteering as they won the Jan Kjellstrom International individual titles at Bracknell yesterday.
British short distance title holder Duncan took the JK title for the first time finishing almost five minutes clear of the opposition with a two day total of 1h 55m 37s.
"I've finally done it," he said, "It's nice to win."
British women's number one Monro, with a total time of 88m08s won by just over two minutes.

Despite victory, the Oslo based woman made no secret of her disappointment with her 10.8km run yesterday at Star Posts, for her sights are set on August's World Championships and she seeks perfection.
"That was shocking," she said, "I didn't get into it on the way to number one and those first few controls set the tone."
But she won on both days and was good enough to hold off sprint champion Sarah Rollins (Army) and title holder Hannah Wootton (Harlequins) who finished 2nd and 3rd.

Duncan too won his 5.8km first day run near Henley beating Oli Johnson into 2nd after the    Sheffield man made a mid-course route choice blunder and compounded the felony by tumbling into a bed of nettles.
So Duncan set out last in yesterday's massive 18km race, a reverse order formula that produced an exciting climax.
By half distance he had caught Johnson and then dropped him with 4km to go.
"You're a hero," Johnson told him at the finish. "A brilliant run, just too strong for me."
Yorkshire's Dickie Wren, 7th on Saturday, had set the total time to beat.
The only question was could Duncan beat it.
He did with Johnson taking 2nd overall while Wren held on to third.

Carlisle  based Scots 17 year old Mhairi Mackenzie is named in the newly released British senior lineup for the Nordic Open Orienteering Championships in Sweden next month but she has turned down selection because of her school exams.
With a run for Scotland in Lithuania already on her schedule for next month she says, "I've got my A-levels this year and I couldn't really miss more time at school."
During the first of the Nordic team trials Mackenzie was winning the British Future Champions Cup race for juniors at Dunkeld.
But she turned out for last weekend's decider at the two day Aros Elite Test in the Lake District and finished up with Britain's best in 4th position both times out.
"I decided to go because it was near me," says the girl who stopped "just wandering about" and started serious orienteering just two years ago. "I knew I'd had a good run and my orienteering was really clean."
But she adds- "It has all been a bit of a surprise."
Fellow Scots team runner Jo Stevenson will take her place in Sweden.

"There was one leg I didn't take the route I wanted and I hesitated before the 2nd last control," he said,"but apart from that I'm satisfied."
But British women's number one Heather Monro, fresh from World Championship training in Switzerland was beaten into 3rd.
Despite a 20 second route choice mistake, Londoner Sarah Rollins (Army) added the sprint title to her recent Night Championship success.

Jamie Stevenson travels from Sweden to contest this weekend's British Sprint Orienteering Championship near Bristol with good recent form behind him.
In Sunday's Nordic series relay at the Danish Spring Cup meeting near Hillerod Stevenson failed by just two seconds to give his new club Goteborg the title.
The Scot was fastest of the day over the final long lap as he brought Goteborg through from 3rd into 2nd and almost made up the 1m 52s deficit on Russia's European middle distance champion Michael Mamleev.
Mamleev won the classic race in Hillerod when defending trophy holder Stevenson checked in at a wrong control.

Orienteering- Duncan starts UK Cup bid

Aberdeen's British international number 2 Jon Duncan and Scottish women's champion Gillian Godfree head the strong Scottish club contingent at Cannock Chase this weekend for a novel start to the UK Cup series.
Last year, Duncan finished runnerup to Bristol's Oli Johnson while Godfree finished 3rd behind Londoners Sarah Rollins and Heather Monro.
Two days of competition get underway today (SAT) with the first ever mountain bike event in the series. As a cross-country time trial rather than a score event, it is in itself something of a rareity.
Duncan gives this one a miss but competes in this evening's night event - the first in the series for two years.
Tomorrow's classic distance race has attracted a truly British calibre entry with only the Scandinavian based national team runners missing.
The exit to the English Midlands has led to a depleted entry for the first of the scottish League events near Pitlochry.
Forth Valley's Hazel Dean and Mar's Sarah Dunn, runners up to Godfree last year, stand to steal an advantage.

Scots champions Jon Musgrave and Sarah Dunn ( both Mar) bid for the British Night Orienteering Championship titles this weekend at Hexham.
Musgrave runs over 9.1km and, with last year's top two Ollie Johnson (Bristol) and Dan Marston (Interlopers) missing stands a good chance of taking the title for the first time. He beat Aberdeen's British team number two Jon Duncan to win the Scottish at Tentsmuir.
Night orienteering may not seem Musgrave's scene for the World veteran bronze medalist is famed for his hard running attack and relocation techniques that can lead to deep trouble in night events.
But Musgrave is willing to change.
"I keep in contact with the map, go steadily, and take care," he says.
And he adds "I'm going reasonably well just now. I trying to get hyped up for it while at the same time approach it sensibly."
Forth Valley's Steve Nicholson and Clydeside's former Scottish title holder Patrick Walder also compete.
London's Sarah Rollins, who beat Heather Monro into 2nd last year starts as women's favourite over 6.5km while Dunn, plus Interlopers Claie Williams  must expect to be in the running for a minor medal against a small but good class field which also includes British team runner Helen Palmer and leading  junior Vicki Brocklebank.

Free trips to run in the 14 day Park World Tour series in Asia in November are on offer for the top three finishers in the new European Pre-tour Series.
The next 12 men and women will get their travel expenses part paid on a sliding scale.
Unlike previous Park Tours which operated on an invitation basis the new series will be open to all contenders who can win through the pre-tour qualifiers.
These get underway with the classic distance event at the Danish Spring Cup in April, and continue with sprint events at the Nordic Open in Sweden, the Swiss pre-worlds sprint challenge (both May), the Forssa Games in Finland (June) and the World Championships in Switzerland in August.
